In 1930, An outcast in his home village, and following the death of his mother, Manik leaves Fujian to Shanghai in search of the father who has deserted his family. Manik finds work with Sam Cho, one of the two powerful local gang bosses, On the run from Sam Cho's men following a scam set up by Fatty, they take refuge in the Rong Li tea house. During the course of a fight with Sam Cho's men, Manik fights like a lion, showing superhuman strength.
After ransacking the place, Fatty and Manik set up home at the tea house with Uncle Yeh and his tenants. They decide to go straight and try their luck as rickshaw pullers. One evening, Manik is hired to take Goldie home, she's of Don ching's girlfriend, the other local gang boss who is Sam Cho's rival. A frienship quickly develops.
Meanwhile, Sam Cho has his eye on the tea house. It is a profitable business, but Uncle Yeh has always refused to sell it. Sam Cho hires a team of kung fu masters to track down Manik and Fatty at the tea house. They attack the tea house and a desperate fight ensues.
Eventually, the kung fu masters are overpowered by Manik's superhuman strength. Once calm has returned, Uncle Yeh and the blind man can finally reveal to Manik who his father really is and why he had to leave his wife and son behind in Fujian...
