Now, a state-owned factory "420 plant" gives way to a modern apartment complex "24 City", located in Sichuan's capital city of Chengdu, the "420 plant" used to produce airplane engines. For more than 50 years, it was the center of life for hundreds of workers. In the 1950s - the old worker, as a mother (Lu Li ping) who lost her son on the long trip from Shenyang, the 1970s - factory executive, a lonely Shanghai woman (Joan Chen) exiled in Chengdu and the present day - young professional, yuppies (Zhao Tao) pondering the uncertain fate faced by her elderly working-class parents. The stories of 3 generations and 8 characters in Chengdu are the history of the Mainland China.
