Celebrated Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung won the coveted Best Actress Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival for her harrowing performance in Clean. Cheung's ex-husband Olivier Assayas (who also directed Cheung in Irma Vep) directs, and wrote the script especially for Cheung, who turns in a magnificent performance, and even performs two songs! Co-starring American actor Nick Nolte and French actress Béatrice Dalle, Clean is a moving, beautifully-rendered tale about one wounded woman's struggle for acceptance in a world that simply will not forget.
Emily Wang (Maggie Cheung) is a struggling singer whose life has been a painful pageant of drugs, regrets, and destructive emotions. After her partner Lee (James Johnston) overdoes in a desolate hotel room, Emily must serve a six-month jail sentence, and upon her exit desires to become a new woman. But the world - and those around her - will not soon forget who she was. Emily longs to be reunited with her son Jay (James Dennis), and to finally be a good mother to him, but Lee's parents Albrecht (Nick Nolte) and Rosemary (Martha Henry) are not willing to give up Jay so quickly.
